Challenge 2023 – Overview
Self-driving bus
The Roads and Transport Authority has launched the 3rd edition of the Dubai World Challenge for Self-Driving Transport under the topic “Self-Driving Buses”.
Shortlisted participants will compete in the two categories “Industry Leaders” and “Local Academia”.
The two categories focus on two Challenge themes aligned on the main topic of “Self-Driving Buses”
Industry leaders
Self-Driving solutions for buses (mini/midi/standard) enabling safe and secure public transportation
Local Academia
Solutions enhancing the passenger experience in Self-Driving buses

In the Industry Leaders category, the challenge is open to companies and organizations providing Self-Driving bus solutions or Self-Driving technologies. Local Academia is associated with UAE-based universities and research institutes.
Applicants for the Challenge 2023 are expected to meet the following characteristics
Industry Leaders
- Company, organization or consortium with full-scale, fully-integrated self-driving bus solution or self-driving technologies for buses
Mini-/midi-/standard bus of at least 5.6 m with a minimum capacity of 12 seats
Industry Leaders will be evaluated based on the four key competence fields “Safety & Security”, “Passenger Transport Performance”, “Operational Design Domain” and “Operational Capabilities” under the theme “Self-Driving solutions for buses (mini/midi/standard) enabling safe and secure public transportation”
Local Academia
- UAE based university or research institute with research and development in areas of self-driving solutions
- Capable to develop a full/small scale working prototype showcasing the solution
Local Academia will be evaluated based on the three key competence fields “Improvement of Passenger Experience”, “Integrability with Self-Driving Buses” and “Maturity of Solution” under the theme “Solutions enhancing the passenger experience in Self-Driving buses”
