Professor Salman Nazir is an internationally recognized expert in human factors, process safety, and autonomous system design. He leads the Training and Assessment Research Group at the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN), where he is also the Scientific Leader of COAST, Norway’s Centre of Excellence in Simulator-Based Training. He holds an adjunct professorship at Nord University Business School.
Professor Nazir’s research focuses on human factors, training methods, virtual reality, simulators, performance assessment, process safety, autonomous systems, and situational awareness. His work addresses the human–technology interface in complex socio-technical systems and safety-critical environments.
With academic and research experience in Italy and South Korea, he brings a global and interdisciplinary perspective to the design of trustworthy and transparent autonomous transport systems. His approach integrates cognitive engineering, immersive simulation, and user-centered design to support the safe deployment of automation in both maritime and land-based mobility.
Professor Nazir has authored over 120 scientific publications and led 26 major research projects, securing €15 million in funding. His insights offer practical strategies for building trust in autonomous technologies through human-centric innovation.
